Lawn Mower Will Run For a While and then Die

This problem can be a mystery to you and take some time to reveal what the real issue is. You are mowing along and then the engine will slowly die on you and come to a complete stop. You turn the key or pull the starter rope and it will suddenly start up and run like it normally does. What?

This happens over and over and it is puzzling to say the least. You can’t seem to find any obvious problem and the engine has good spark. So what is causing this problem?

A couple of things that cause this is the gas cap is not venting properly. As you are mowing, the gasoline level goes down and the gas must pull in air to prevent it from vacuum locking. If the vent is plugged, it will not allow air into the gas tank and thus will not let fuel into the engine or fuel injection.

You can unscrew the gas cap and if you hear an inrush of air, then you know that the cap is not venting as it should and will need replaced.

Another problem is that you can have debris that is covering the pickup tube in the gas tank or inside the carburetor float bowl. The fuel sloshing around in the carburetor bowl can cause debris to get stuck to the main jet and stop the fuel flow to the engine. After the engine dies, the debris will sink back to the bottom and when you start the lawn mower, it will run as normally.

Riding Lawn Mower Makes a Thumping Noise When Running

Are you hearing a thumping or vibration type of noise coming from under the lawn mower chassis? Is it a steady noise or does it get worse when you are driving the mower?

Let’s think about this for a minute. When the riding lawn mower is running, the drive belt is turning. The drive belt increases in RPM when you move the throttle up and down. When the throttle is set to lower RPM, the noise might be louder because the engine noise is less and may be less apparent when the RPM is higher.

What most likely is going on is that you have lost a piece out of the drive belt and when it rolls over a pulley, it creates this thumping sound. If you hear multiple thumping sounds, then you know that there are several pieces missing out of the drive pulley.

There could also be a problem such as a bearing is going out on a drive pulley or the pulley itself could have a flat spot in it or a piece broken out of it. Carefully check all the pulleys and bearings and if they are suspect, replace them.

I hope this helps you find out what is causing the thumping noise in your riding lawn mower and that you resolve it. If you need a lawn mower repair shop, visit our Locations page for help today.

Riding Lawn Mower Dies While Going Uphill

Are you mowing a steep hill and the mower starts surging or popping and then it suddenly dies? That is kind of a scary feeling as now you have to freewheel downhill and hope that the brakes work.

So, if you made it down to the bottom of the hill alright, let’s take a look at a few things that will cause this problem.

The first item that is easy to check is the fuel quantity. If you tank is getting low, the fuel pickup tube may be sucking air and causing the carburetor or fuel injectors to not get fuel. Fill your fuel tank and try to mow up that steep hill again and see if this corrects the problem.

You could have an obstruction in the fuel tank, fuel line or fuel filter. These items will need to be taken apart to visually inspect them for dirt, grass clippings or other debris. As you are mowing up a hill, it is harder to pull the fuel up from the tank and through the lines and filter and any obstruction will prevent the fuel from getting to the carburetor or fuel injectors or fuel pump.

The next item that can cause this problem is the fuel pump. A weak fuel pump cannot maintain the vacuum necessary to pull the fuel as it normally does. Check the vacuum line that connects to the fuel pump for any cuts or cracks and ensure that it is connected well.

Fuel flow can also be tested for what is coming out of the fuel pump while cranking the engine.

My Riding Lawn Mower Battery is Dead

So you turn the key and nothing happens right? But is your battery actually dead or is there another problem that is causing this symptom?

The first item to check is your main fuse. On most riding lawn mowers it is either under the hood or under the body near the drive system and usually on the left side. Remove it and see if the wire inside is burned in two. If it is, replace it. If the terminal blades are corroded, clean them and reinstall.

The second thing you want to do is an actual test of the battery to make sure that is has no volts and amps. You probably don’t have a fancy battery tester to do that, so you can disconnect it and take it to an auto parts store to have it tested.

If your battery is over 2 years old, it could be on its way out. While you have the battery out, it is a good time to clean the battery terminals with a wire brush and apply some terminal protector when you hook the terminals back up.

Those are the most common items that fail on a riding lawn mower that causes the battery to appear dead. When my riding lawn mower battery is dead and these tips will not fix that, visit our locations page to find a lawn mower repair expert near you.
